Why repetition will help your child in his or her learning? (Education, Teaching & Tutoring)
By Ho Hoe Teck, Sean
The Common Background

Throughout my years of studies and experiences as a tutor, I have come across many examples where certain topics of a subject are consistently being repeated in an effort to reinforce learning. I am sure repetition itself has had its place in your studies somewhere along the way as well.

For example, in mathematics, one can often encounter a particular math problem, which uses the same math concept, but is always rephrased or worded in another way or in another situation and reappears later as another seemingly different problem. Such a method, is intrinsically trying to use repetitive learning to help a student to understand the application of a math concept under different contexts. The same might have gone for many other subjects, such as in Languages, Physics, Sociology, Psychology, Human geography, etc, etc.

However, as many students would have probably experienced before or are still doing so, such repetition can mean the growth of tremendous boredom and irritation and eventually lead to the reluctance of these students to continue to be interested in their studies.

For many students, they would still continue their studies out of sheer responsibility and respect for their parents or guardians, who might have struggled to pay for their expensive education, but would it better, if we can let the students understand why repetitive learning can actually help the students in their academic learning abilities? How about helping that smaller group of students, who have the potential to learn more, but are being stifled by the weight of such repetition in their academic work?

Such an understanding might have lifted that ominous cloud of doubt in those students’ minds about the apparent mundane nature of their academic work and let the students gradually learn to appreciate how appropriate levels of repetitive learning can make them learn better.

In this article, I will explain the intimate benefits of repetitive learning, that are acknowledged by many serious academics and neuroscientists and hopefully, tutors, teachers, parents and even students can draw some faith and understanding from the contents of this article, to know that appropriate repetition can be useful in helping students to learn difficult concepts over a comfortable period of time.
